Glaucoma is a group of diseases that affect the optic nerve of the eye and without treatment, may result in blindness.
Aqueous humor is the clear fluid that circulates inside your eye. Your eye continually produces aqueous humor. In a healthy eye, an equal amount of this fluid flows out of your eye. With glaucoma, the aqueous humor does not flow out of the eye at an equal rate. Fluid pressure in the eye builds up and causes damage to the optic nerve fibers. Damage to the nerve causes areas of permanent blind spots in vision. Usually glaucoma does not have any symptoms until permanent vision loss becomes noticeable.

One half of the glaucoma population are not aware they have the disease. As time goes by, glaucoma progressively narrows your field of vision. It is vital to educate and screen as many people as possible to determine the risk for those people so they may seek treatment to reduce the possibility of blindness from glaucoma.
